Three companies have deals with the city to build homes on the former Marine base, adding to the nearly 4,200 homes already on the base land, said executive coordinator Stephanie Najera in an email.

Standard Pacific was given city approval in July to build nearly 375 new homes northeast of The District at Tustin Legacy shopping center, Najera said. The Irvine Co. and St. Anton Partners were approved in November to create 496 regularly priced apartments and 262 affordable apartments.

“It’s now starting to see movement on all the areas where the economy was holding everything up,” said City Manager Jeff Parker. In Tustin, retail sales – therefore, sales tax revenue for the city – have increased. That’s a good sign that our economy is doing better, Parker said.

If the fiscal cliff doesn’t push the country into another recession, residents should see more development and more interest in the Tustin base property, Parker said.
