First look: Latest housing project spurred by Milpitas' BART station is now under construction
Construction has begun on 317 luxury apartment units in Milpitas, the first phase of a planned high-density community of 583 units by Anton Development Co.
It’s part of a much larger conversion of what once was 437 acres of industrial land around the Great Mall into more than 7,000 residential units near the Montague light-rail station called for in the city’s Transit Area Specific Plan.
That station is being linked by an overhead walkway to the new Milpitas BART station, which is nearly completed and expected to begin service in the first half of 2018.
“We’re really big on walkability and being close to public transportation,” said Jason Villareal, director of asset management for Anton Development Co. “It had a significant role in our choosing that land.”

The project, called Anton 750 at 750 E. Capitol Ave., is scheduled for completion in 2020 to be joined later by Anton 730 with another 266 units. Anton 750 will include studio, one- and two-bedroom floor plans from 521 to 1,362 square feet.
“Milpitas is exciting because it’s the first time BART comes into Santa Clara County,” Andrew Baker, senior vice president of development and acquisitions at Anton, told the Business Journal last year. “It’s the holy grail because it’s also an open VTA light rail line to Caltrain and that goes up the Peninsula. It’s completing the transit loop in the Bay Area.”
Among the amenities of the communities are a fitness center, pet spa, bike repair shop, automated package lockers, a rooftop lounge and lap pool, spa and cabana-style refuge areas.
Most of the company’s projects have been in the Sacramento area but it built the 275-unit Anton La Moraga apartment community at the Cottle Road exit from the West Valley Freeway in 2014.
The Milpitas development is one of three Anton projects in the Bay Area since then. They include Anton Menlo, 394 units in Menlo Park near the Marsh Road exit on 101, and Anton Mountain View, a 144-unit development at 394 Ortega Ave., in Mountain View scheduled to be completed in 2019.
